Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of adult disability. About 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year. Be sure to know the signs and symptoms of stroke, so you can be prepared to take quick action and perhaps save a life.
- Signs of Stroke in Men and Women
- Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone else has any of these symptoms.
Medicare covers Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care to help you recover from a stroke after a 3-day related hospital stay. SNF care is health care given when you need skilled nursing or therapy staff to manage, observe, and evaluate your care. A SNF could be part of a nursing home or hospital. Medicare certifies these facilities if they have the staff and equipment to give skilled nursing care, therapy services, and/or other related health services.
