AMA to reconsider support of requiring Americans to purchase health insurance

The AMA's House of Delegates is to vote in the coming days on whether to withdraw its support of the mandatory health insurance requirement in the Affordable Care Act. The resolution comes from three surgery groups, representing a minority of AMA physician members, that say the mandate will "likely undermine the innovations and improvements in health care financing that can evolve in a free market" and call for the AMA to support making health insurance an individual responsibility that can be aided by noncompulsory measures.
